Research & Education

Our project involves both studying and learning the science and skills of reforestation practice as well as spreading this knowledge to others in our community here in Singapore.

We work closely with the Plant Resource Centre at the Singapore Botanic Gardens and are indebted to the Elango Velautham, the Assistant Director for his generous sharing of expertise and plant material. Elango is Singapore's foremost Tropical Forest Conservation expert and has trained many of our students in conservation techniques.

We are also advised and helped in the nurseries by Dr. David Neidel, Asia Program Co-ordinator at Yale's Environmental Leadership and Training Initiative (ELTI). David is based at Yale-NUS and is also a UWC Alum and parent. David has helped us build partnerships with Yale-NUS and train our students for our UWCSEA Certificate in Tropical Forest Restoration Practice.

We are currently working with Yale-NUS Assistant Professor Dr Michiel van Breugel on a research project studying leaf traits on different species to test suitability for different conditions in tree nurseries and planting sites. Our students take regular measurements of leaf sizes, condition and mortality and we hope to produce publishable results in the near future.
